Hydrology and Water Resources Management

In Hannover, Hydrology and Water Resources Management can be studied at the following institutions:

  • Institute of water resources management, hydrology and agricultural hydraulic engineering (WAWI)
  • Franzius-Institute for Hydraulic, Waterways and Coastal Engineering
  • International M. Sc. Programme

Institute of water resources management, hydrology and agricultural hydraulic engineering (WAWI)

WAWI is part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science of the Leibniz University of Hannover and represents the following areas in teaching and research:

  • Surface Hydrology
  • Urban Hydrolog
  • Grundwaterhydrology
  • Water Resources Management(Water Quantity and Quality)
  • Hydraulic Engineering
  • Water Management in Developing Countries

Research at the Institute covers a wide range of themes including hydrology, water resources management, geohydrology, agricultural hydraulic engineering, and water management in tropical climates. Both basic research as well as applied research is performed, often requiring interdisciplinary approaches. The research activities focus on mathematical modelling of hydrological processes and on the development of novel strategies for integrated water resources management. Moreover, experimental and field work is implemented dealing with precipitation measurement techniques, soil parameter estimation and groundwater research.

Franzius-Institute for Hydraulic, Waterways and Coastal Engineering

Fields of activity

hydraulics, river engineering, water road maintenance and planning, port operations and logistics, coastal protection, dike monitoring, flood control and risk management, environmental impacts of water engineering, tidal influences and offshore engineering.

Franzius Institute has access to numerous, some worldwide unique experimental facilities, covering about 16,800 square meters of laboratory space. Additionally 24,000 m² outdoor laboratory space is available.

International M. Sc. Programme, Universität Hannover

Water Resources and Environmental Management (WATENV)

WATENV is a research-oriented international Master of Science Programme offered by Leibniz University of Hanover, Germany. Students acquire interdisciplinary knowledge and key qualifications in the field of sustainable water resources management. Graduates are trained for filling responsible positions e.g. in research and higher environmental administration. Quality and availability of water is being increasingly threatened by societal and environmental change. There is a growing demand for experts in the field of water-related subjects, opening up great job opportunities, primarily in the developing countries

Description: research oriented, interdisciplinary presence Master course for international students
