Department of soil and hydrogeography
The focus of the department of soil and hydrogeography in terms of research and teaching is on the study of pedologic and aquatic ecosystems. A central issue is the exploration of the numerous impacts of changing environmental conditions on the ecosystem components soil and water both in their function as resources and habitats. Based on an interdisciplinary approach and the integration of fundamental and applied research, pedologic and hydrological processes are investigated thoroughly as to their spatial distribution, temporal dynamics and interrelations. To this end, biochemical analyses of the water quality are implemented, water and material flows in catchments acquired or conceptions for sustainably handling the resource water developed. The correct assessment of soils in the terrain, the determination of chemical and physical properties in the laboratory or the evaluation of hydrological characteristics of a soil in terms of the emergence of floods are key elements of the department.
